Things you need to know for NX35:
1) The Daytime Events Are Worth Skipping Work For:
While most of the publicity and excitement surrounding NX35 has been for the evening time events of the Conferette, it might be easy to overlook or forget about the wonderful things that are happening during the day. The panels, discussions and speeches made during these four days are just as, if not more important to building a strong sense of community between musicians and fans. It is a very unique way to connect with and hear from some of the most important and influential people in DFW music. As always, I am going to refer you to the NX35 website for more details on the event, but here are a few of the daytime discussions that caught my eye.
"Where We Hear Local Music"
Thursday 3-4:30pm at Banter
Learn the tricks of the trade from some of DFW's best music writers and radio show hosts. Figure out where you need to look to find great local music, and where bands should be posting their music.
"Keynote: Steve Albini"
Friday 1-2:30pm at Hailey's
Hear from the keynote speaker of the event, Steve Albini. The legendary engineer and musician is an example for all DIY artists out there.
"Is Midlake Better Than Mylie Cyrus"
Friday 4-6pm at Banter
I feel comfortable answering "YES" to that question. But then why is Mylie Cyrus one of the biggest stars in the world? Find out at this discussion.
"The Ever Shifting Live Music Landscape in DFW"
Saturday 1-2:30pm at Sweetwater
Tackling the dynamics of live music venues in DFW. House shows are becoming a more and more popular and bands are finding great success by simply bypassing traditional venues all together.
2) The Flaming Lips Show Is Free:
In case you have been living under a rock or just now stumbling upon the greatness of NX35, there is one thing you should know above all else. Saturday afternoon at 3 pm, the gates open at the Denton fairgrounds for the HUGE and FREE show featuring The Flaming Lips and Midlake. The outstanding planning of this event should be noted. The whole thing will be over by 10 which will leave people plenty of time to get back to the square to enjoy the rest of the shows at all of the venues.
Even if you don't attend anything else this weekend (which seems nothing short of crazy to me) you should at least come to this one.
3) You Really Should Get A Wristband:
Wristbands are on sale through NX35.com and are an unbelievable deal for any music fan. They cost $65 and will gain you access to the entirety of the four day event. That means you can walk right into any of the daytime events, then see the openers at Hailey's skip over to The Boiler Room for a bit then out to Dan's for the headliners, or any other combination of the participating venues. Even if you don't plan on making an entire weekend of it, single day wristbands are also available, but hurry! The Saturday wrist bands are already sold out!
4) My Denton Music Will Have You Covered:
Be sure to check back right here during the event. My Denton Music will be on top of everything you need to know, see, or hear about NX35. Interviews, reviews, previews, or any other -iews you need, we will deliver!
Have fun Denton!
