NX35 Preview Pt1

Andrew Tinker is one of the most well respected and most talented artists in Texas. Since the release of his debut album early in 2009, Tinker has solidified himself as one of the very best musicians Denton has to offer.

Giggle Party is one of those bands that you just cant help but love whether or not you really want to. They are rooted down in Dallas, but they fit in perfectly to the Denton scene. Their songs are catchy and ridiculous. Their live shows are over the top and a blast to attend. If you have not heard or seen these guys, check them out. I can not wait to see what they roll out for their set at North By.

Fishboy is an artist who I have been listening to for for years now. He is off beat and a little bit weird, but I just can not get enough of him. I would not expect him to be awarded one of the highest profile slots during the fest, but that's okay. He will still have a great show, as he almost always does, and you should definitely make time to check it out.

Manned Missiles is another one of those bands who will not get a headlining spot during North By 35, but I am still pretty excited to see what they bring to the table. A few weeks ago, the band released their debut EP entitled "Might As Well" as a free download. To many music fans and critics surprise, it was actually very good. It was absolutely one of the early high points of the new year for me.

I really love Sleep Whale. They are simplistic and beautiful and the perfect soundtrack for so many occasions. Let me name a few things that are just a little bit better when listening to Sleep Whale: Relaxing after a long day of work, getting ready for a long day of work, loading a bowl, cleaning out the resin, taking a shower, acid, naps, and hugging!

Fergus and Geronimo
This was one of the most talked about new bands of last year and for good reason. After releasing just a few tracks on their MySpace page, record labels began courting this duo within days. Thankfully, they have been added to the bill for NX35 and you are going to want to check them out!

Oso Closo
Well, if you are a regular visitor to this site, than you know all about our love for this band. Oso Closo is a Denton staple and it is a very good thing that they too have been announced as a late addition to NX35. Last year they released "Today is Beauty's Birthday" to some VERY positive reviews. They are a paradigm of what a good hard working and talented band should be.

Spooky Folk
I love me some Spooky Folk. If you are into shilled out indie folkish songs, this is a band you will want to search for during NX35. Wonderful stuff, is their track, "I'm A Ghost" my personal favorite in their collection. Give it a listen and enjoy one of the more underrated bands in North Texas.

Neon Indian
Oh Yes! This one might be my favorite of the newest additions to the already impressive lineup of NX35. Check out This Wonderful Interview from a few weeks ago and get to know one of the hottest new acts in the ultra cool underground music scene.

The Kissaway Trail
All the way from Denmark, The Kissaway Trail is an infectious indie rock band who will be headlining at Dan's Silver Leaf on Sunday, the final evening of the conferette. They have made a pretty strong name for themselves in their home country and will be kicking off their US tour the week of NX35.

Carrie Rodriguez
She is headlining at Dan's on Thursday and is an AMAZING artist! This is going to be an outstanding way to kick off the weekend. Carrie Rodriguez calls Brooklyn, New York her home and should expect a huge crowd here in Denton. Just have a look at this terrific artist and see what I am talking about.

Indian Jewelry
From Houston comes Indian Jewelry, a terrific band in the ultra-cool shoe gaze genre. I am actually looking forward to seeing what this band will do during their show at Rubber Gloves on Friday night. I have not heard a ton from this band but what I have heard is pretty good. Check it.

The Black Angels
Of course, The Black Angels has to be on the list of top acts from out of town. They call Austin their home and should bring a huge crowd to Hailey's on Saturday night. In 2007 the band really found their stride and gained much popularity both here in Texas as well as nationwide. In that year they hit the lineups of major music fests like Lollapalooza. Early the next year the band released their second full length album that made its way to number 23 on Billboard's Heatseekers Chart.
